10 days riding in Laos to visit the most interesting places of this beauty country: Vientiane – Vangvieng – Xaysomboune – Phonsavan – Nam Neun – Viengxay – Viengkham – Luang Prabang!
Round: Vientiane – Vangvieng – Xaysomboune – Phonsavan – Nam Neun – Viengxay – Viengkham – Luang Prabang – Vietiane
Day 1: Vientiane - Vang Vieng. ~220 km, ~5 h
Starting in the early morning by riding in the dirt road along the Mekong River, which is the natural border between Laos and Thailand. Along the way, we explore the daily life of the fishing villages on both the Lao and Thai sides of the border. One arrival in Vang Vieng, we do the rafting to enjoy the sunset in the Mekong before the diner.
Day 2: Vang Vieng - Xaisomboune. ~105 km, ~4 h
In the morning, we continue to explore Vang Vieng by tubing and rafting in the fresh- air that’s very different in comparison with the trip in the after-noon of the day before. Then we follow the dirt road heading south to the Saisomboune Special Zone: an occasion to test your drive level, very funny riding!
Day 3: Xaisomboune - Phonsavan. ~140 km, ~5 h
Today, we ride through jungle and limestone karsts. We stop for visiting Tha Vang and Nam Pheung villages and enjoy the beautiful panorama of Phou Bia Mountain, the highest one in Laos at 2,819m above sea level.
Arrive in Phonsavan, we explore the Plain of Jars site: These stone jars appear in clusters, ranging from a single or a few to several hundred jars at lower foothills surrounding the central plain and upland valleys. Stay overnight in Xieng Khoang.
Day 4: Phonsavan - Nam Neun. ~140 km, ~4 h
In the morning, we continue visit Plain of Jars, a good time to have nice pictures then we ride to the historical site of Muong Khoune - old capital of Xieng Khoang province to visit Tham Piew cave, where, on the 24 November 1968, a rocket from an American jet killed about 400 people. In the after- noon, by the dirt road, we arrive to Nam Neun and pass overnight here.
Day 5: Nam Neun - Xam Nua - Vieng Xay. ~120 km, ~3 h
We ride to Xamnua by a great road. Stops along the road for visiting some local hill-tribe villages. Visit Suan Hin Stone Garden then have lunch at a local restaurant in Xam Nua. After lunch, we continue to ride 30 kilometers more to Vieng Xay, the former Pathet Lao Revolutionary head-quarters with its famous hundred limestone cliffs, caves and Pathet Lao stories from the second Indochina War. Overnight in Vieng Xay.
Day 6: Xam Nua - Vieng Kham. ~260 km, ~7 h
We return to the road No. 6 to Phu Lao from there we ride 60 km on the dirt road and have lunch in Vieng Thong. Then we ride through an area of dense rainforest. Stop to visit Sam Soun village before arriving in Vieng Kham where we stay overnight.
Day 7: Vieng Kham - Luang Prabang. ~180 km, ~5 h
Following the road No 6, we ride to Nong Khiew, stop to visit Nam Pak village before having lunch in Pak Mong. Visit Pak Ou village before going to the Mekong River. We explore Tham Ting & Tham Phoum caves these are very famous for their thousands of Buddha statues inside. You are lucky to buy special Laos whisky for a great diner in Luang Prabang.
Day 8: Luang Prabang. Visit around the old capital of Laos
A very peaceful day to visit Luang Prabang with many watts and many cultural sites spanning 700 years of Lao history: King palace, temples & pagodas, Phusi hill, local night’markets…
Day 9: Luang Prabang - Vientiane. ~420 km, ~8 h
Riding in the early morning to return to Vientiane: quite long day but easy. We stop quite many times on the road to take the pictures. Arrive in Vientiane and overnight at hotel.
Day 10: Riding around Vientiane before saying “Good-bye”
Just peaceful riding around the city to explorer the daily life of the capital people: shopping, visiting some pagodas then return the motorbike to our garage. We drink “Beer Laos” for the good-bye fiesta before going to the airport.
